Your device
The file is encrypted with a new random key (AES-256-GCM) before it leaves your computer.
That file key is locked separately for each recipient with their public key, and once for you.
Volustra vault
The vault keeps the encrypted file and the locked keys. It holds no key that opens either of them.
When someone asks for the file, the vault checks they are on the list and issues a download link valid for two minutes.
Recipient’s device
Their private key, which never leaves their device, unlocks the file key.
The file key decrypts the file on their device. Nobody else is involved.
The vault never sees the content of a file, a file key or anyone’s private key.
File content is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before upload. We store ciphertext only.
Your private key is created on your device. A recovery code, shown once, is the only backup, and we never receive it.
Each colleague’s key fingerprint is remembered. A change stops the transfer until a person confirms it.
